Native American Flute

For many years, I have been fascinated by woodwind instruments. I have several music CDs of James Galway, who beautifully plays the flute. I find the flute, and the pan pipes, to have a wonderfully clear tonal quality.

A couple of years ago, I heard a local musician play the Native American (Indian) flute, and was captured by its hauntingly beautiful sound. In October 2004, while driving across Oklahoma, I stopped at a "trading post" and bought an Indian flute. This one was made by Odell Borg, who makes High Spirits flutes. I got the Crow black ebonized flute, in the key of A.

Since I played clarinet in the high school band, it turned out that playing the Indian flute is not all that difficult.

Here is a recording of "I'm Just a Poor Wayfaring Stranger," which plays remarkably well on the Indian flute.
